To unblock drains, I carry a full range of the necessary equipment in my van, as drain unblocking is a job I typically do several times a week. Drain unblocking is often a simple enough matter once the location of the blockage has been found. When the problem is underground somewhere, this is where the detective work comes in, as it involves lifting manhole covers on the property and in the street beyond. I use a set of professional drain rods for unblocking drains and probing the underground pipes where I think the blockage is. Because the blockage can occur in the trap of the last manhole in the system before the main sewer, a broom handle or plunger would not be much use.

Drain unblocking may entail the use of caustic, industrial-strength chemicals to dislodge solid masses embedded in inaccessible pipes; this is a job for the experts as just a drop of these materials on the skin or in the eyes can be serious. Unblocking drains is an activity that has many approaches to it, and I would never simply dive in with the toxic chemicals, plungers or drain rods before I know what the exact problem is.
