When the water supply system leaks or a repair is needed, you'll have to shut off the water. It's a good idea to know in advance where and how to turn off the water to your house in case of an emergency (water pipes bursting or leakages).
When the pipes in the walls of a house aren't properly insulated, they can and often do freeze and rupture. When a pipe bursts, the water flows, gushes from the pipe, and can turn a basement into a river within minutes. You can't prevent the leading cause of water damage loss--hurricanes-- but you can take a few precautions before the next freeze that may save your home from the devastating effects of frozen and broken water pipes.
When water overflows the bowl there is a blockage somewhere in the toilet or drain line. If the obstruction is the result of an object dropped into the toilet, such as a toy or a washcloth, then it is best to try and retrieve it rather than force it farther along. Other clogs resulting from normal flushed waste may be cleared with the use of a plunger or closet auger.
The bowl of a sink has a drain at the bottom and an overflow drain near the high-water mark. In the drain is the strainer. The strainer blocks large objects from going down the drain. However, small objects and especially hair can end up in the drain. The strainer tends to snag hair and is often the cause of a slow or gurgling drain.
Collect cooking fats in a container such as a can and dispose of it in the garbage rather than pouring fats down the drain. Fats can solidify in cold pipes and create clogs. There are some other such useful tips to prevent clogs.
No matter what brand or type of faucet you have installed, it's going to spring a leak or malfunction in some way or the other. There are some handy tips to handle simple faucet problems.
If you have a boiler based heating system, it will have an expansion tank. However, only closed-vent systems require the expansion tank to be drained periodically. A handy tip to go about doing it.
